Beeeee City!

A few weeks back for a science day we visited a local farm, Bee City in Cottageville. It was a fun day of learning all about bees and visiting with the exotic animals they keep. We learned some fun facts about bees like:
  1. Queen bees on average live for 3yrs while worker bees only live about 6 weeks
  2. The hive is mostly made up of female "worker" bees (10,000 to 30,000) and only a few male "drone" bees (3-5)
  3. Honey can only be made by honeybees and it is made inside the bee when the nectar they collect is mixed with special enzymes and then are secreted back into the hive.
We also visited with several unique animals, including baby ringtail lemurs, llamas, alpacas, monkeys, and bunnies.
